以下概述工業自動化應用的 3 個主要等級:

等級 1 - 監控器等級:

主要是以電腦為基礎的系統,例如搭配特定供應商工業製程控制軟體的工業電腦 (機架式安裝與面板),用於製程參數化與視覺化。 互相通訊基於 Gbit LAN、頻寬更高的骨幹,或無線拓撲 (WLAN)。 為避免資料遺失並確保安全,安裝了不斷電系統 (UPS)。

核心元件:工業電腦、平板電腦、面板電腦、HMI、WLAN

等級 2 - 控制等級:

這是執行自動化程式所在的自動化系統等級。 這個等級上的系統需要高度即時功能,並以執行本身專有 OS 的特殊控制器架構為基礎。 在這裡高度即時而且符合規格的互相通訊匯流排通訊協定 (依據 IEEE 1588) 攸關緊要。

核心元件:PLC、HMI、現場匯流排 (CAN、EtherCAT、Profibus 等)、WLAN、Safety (SIL)。

等級 3 - 現場等級:

這個等級包括所有端子設備,例如搭配周邊 PLC 或遠端 I/O 系統的感測器和促動器,透過現場匯流排,提供對於所收集資料的預先處理,以及對於主要 PLC 的通訊。

核心元件:Micro PLC、馬達控制、工業感測器、促動器驅動器、繼電器、開關、無線控制 (RFID,使用 IEEE 802.15.4 拓撲的無線感測器網路)
